When a tree on your property grows old and develops problems, it can be difficult to know when it should be removed. Some old trees are not a threat to your property may be left alone, and are okay to die without any human intervention. However, some trees on your landscape pose a genuine threat and should be removed professionally.
Questions To Ask
It can be tricky to know when you should remove a tree, and a number of questions need to be answered before you make the decision. Consider these questions when you see a tree that may need to be removed:
- Is there trunk damage?
Trunk damage can include vertical cracks, seams, dead branch stubs while large, old wounds show internal decay. If the tree trunk shows these damages and the injured area is over 25 percent of the circumference of the trunk, then the tree may need to be removed. If the damage is less than 25 perfect, the wounds should heal over time, and the tree can stay put.
- Is the tree hollow?
The life support tissue of a tree is on the outer edges of the trunk, meaning that trees can actually live for many years with a hollow trunk. A tree living with a hollow trunk can compromise the strength of the tree, making the tree dangerous. If one-third of the interior of the tree is hollow or rotten, that is a sign that the tree should be removed.
- Are there large dead branches?
Large damages branches can pose just as much of a threat to your property as a dead tree. Falling branches can damage cars, your landscape or home, and should regularly be removed. If you see dead branches and are worried they will break off soon, call Nature’s Work for tree trimming, so we can remove tree branches without removing the entire tree.
