Now that fall and fall temperatures are fully upon us, you may be itching to add some new features to your landscape before the ground starts to freeze. But with frigid temperatures heading our way, is it safe to plant a tree or should you wait for next spring to plant them? Before digging around your home, let’s take a look if it is too late to plant a tree this fall.
How Late Can You Plant a Tree in the Fall?
Although the main rule is that mid-August to mid-October is an ideal time of year for planting new trees, this time frame can actually be stretched a bit. So, to find out if it is really is too late: look outside. If the trees in your area still have leaves, it is fine to plant new trees. You can also use a soil thermometer to measure the temperature in the early morning. If the soil is 50 degrees or higher for a few consecutive days, it is good to plant.
Can I Plant Any Trees?
When measuring the soil temperature, keep in mind 50 degrees or higher is only for deciduous trees. These are trees that shed their leaves before winter. This means they focus only on growing and providing water to the roots during the winter. But if you are planting an evergreen tree like pine or spruce, you should hold off until the soil temperature is lower than 60 degrees. This will allow the tree to get the nutrients they need before the ground freezes.
What if I Plant a Tree When the Soil is Cold?
Planting a tree when the soil is too cold is asking for trouble. This will cause the tree to have reduced root growth and eventually kill the tree. If you find out this information after planting the tree, all if not lost but you will have to try to boost its health. Make sure to water, fertilize, and prune the tree. You should also keep an eye out for pests and diseases.
